AN INTERVIEW WITH SARAH DESHAW
How long have you been a wedding photographer and how did you become a photographer?
I have been a professional wedding photographer since 2006, but I have nearly always had a camera in my hand!
My career took a big leap In 2008 when I won a photo contest to photograph a wedding with celebrity wedding photographer, Bob Davis. I got an opportunity to work with Bob and his lovely wife Dawn and be submerged in the industry in a new and very exciting way.
We love your portfolio. Everything looks fantastic...so can you tell us what sets you apart from all the other wedding photographers out there?
Absolutely. First and most importantly Brent and myself take a special interest in getting to know our clients. We find that in order to get to photograph our clients in the best way possible we need to take an opportunity to connect with you. We have done this various ways with our clients: over dinner, on the phone, or through skype. We love getting to know our couples because we feel we have to know who you are and who the two of you are together in order to capture you and your relationship best. Also, I photograph exclusively natural light whenever possible. This allows the light to wrap around my clients naturally, which helps create an even more candid feel to the images, because there isn't light interference showing that a photographer clearly took that photo. Instead, it allows the photo and moment to be felt without thinking about the photographer at all. That being said I use my best judgment on every given situation and am experienced on adding in supplementary light when its necessary. (ex: dark churches, reception ballroom)
Who do you work best with?
We work best with couples who place a high value on their wedding photography, and understand the importance of it. We love working with couples who love fashion, design, traveling, and individuals who love love!
Who is not going to benefit from your services?
Inquiries who are concerned with getting only formal photos and individuals who are shopping just for price usually aren't the best fit for our services.
Do you have a second photographer or assistant?
Yes! Brent, my handsome husband and assistant, also photographs with me on the wedding day. This works out really well especially when there are situations where I wish I could be in two places at once (for example: when the bride and groom are getting ready separately). Actually, it is one of my favorite things when I am going through the photos after the wedding and I get to see what the guys were doings in between what the ladies were doing in a sequence of photos. Brent and I have photographed together consistently since we have been married and we have a really great system worked out. I love working with someone I can trust to execute my vision.
What gear do you use?
I am a firm believer that it is a photographers artistic vision and experience that makes the best photographs, but having the best gear is also extremely important. I have purchased all of my gear based on my photographing style.
2 Canon EOS 5D Mark IIs
Canon 50mm 1.2 L series lens
Canon 35mm 1.4 L series lens
Canon 85 mm 1.2 L series lens
Canon 24-70mm L series lens
Sigma 50mm 2.8 macro lens
3 580ex Strobes4 Pocketwizard Transceivers
Powerex Batteries (for flashes and pocketwizards)
Lowell ID video lightWescott light stands
Think Tank Airport International Rolling Bag
Will you work with the vendors I have already found that I want to work with?
Absolutely! We prefer getting your vendor list before the wedding so we can reach out to your vendors to connect ahead of time so we can work together to provide you with the best experience possible.
I love your work, but my wedding won't be in your area, would you consider traveling for my wedding?
Absolutely! We really enjoy traveling for weddings. We have photographed weddings in Italy, Canada, Hawaii, California, Atlanta, Nashville, Iowa, Las Vegas, Florida, and, of course we have done many weddings at our home base in the Golden Isles in Georgia.
Can I buy a CD with all of my wedding photos on it?
You can definitely purchase all of the digital photos and rights. That being said I am moving away from offering the images on a CD because I recently discovered burned CDs only have a life of 7-9 years, so now I am offering cloud storage on a really great app. Plus, I love technology and like to stay on the cutting edge for my clients. Some of the newest computers coming out don't even have a CD drive, so I want to make sure I am giving you files in a way you will be able to use them down the road. It is great because you can download and share and let your friends and family download off of it (it keeps the work off of you and your sweetheart because you don't have to go through the images and send them out to people). You can view the images on your iphone, ipad, and computer. You log in to the app with your facebook account. It's pretty cool!
At the end of one year you will have the option to extend the cloud storage for an additional year with the hosting company for $35, or you can just be sure you have downloaded them all. I recommend downloading all of the files onto at least 2 separate locations, so if you have any computer issues, you wont have to worry about losing the files. (You may be safe if you download them, and both your parents download all the files for back up)
If someone doesn't have a Facebook account can they still access the pictures through the app?
If someone doesn't have facebook they can just sign up for a facebook account and just not activate it, so they can still have the benefit of the login without having to be a part of the facebook community.
Do you have liability insurance?
Yes! Many venues require liability insurance, and I am covered for up to two million. If your venue requires a certificate, I will send them one at no charge to you.
Do you take more than one wedding per day?
No. I dedicate the entire day to only your wedding, so I can be focused to bring you the best benefit of our creative services. I do this for peace of mind for my clients and myself to know there will never be any scheduling conflicts.
What is your payment schedule?
We require a contract, which we will send digitally, and a 50% retainer fee of your final booking price to reserve your wedding date. The final 50% is due 4 weeks prior to your wedding date.
This sounds like everything we are looking for. How do we start the process?
The next step is for you to email me through the contact section above in order to set up a complimentary consultation. I want to hear about your wedding needs, learn about who you two are as individuals and as a couple, see if we are a good match, and see what type of coverage fits your preferences, style and budget.
I am not engaged yet, is it okay if I contact you?
Yes! I have had several couples contact me before their engagement, especially if they are planning on having a short engagement and they want to be sure to secure their choice vendors. This way as soon as it is official we can go ahead and get a contract in motion.
We have some more questions before we decide if we want to move forward. Can I contact you?
Yes, in fact we highly encorage and require a complimentary consultation in order that we can answer all of your questions and make sure we are a great fit for one another. You can call me at : 912-506-2973 or email me at: sarah@sarahdeshaw.com to discuss your needs and desires.
